"If ye love me, keep my commandments", Jesus taught (John 14:15). God gives us commandments because He loves us. They are meant to guide us and protect us from temporal and spiritual harm. In turn, we show our love for God by choosing to follow the instructions He has given us.

Sometimes, we don't understand the commandments God gives us. They may appear to conflict with our own well-intentioned efforts and goals. If we are willing to trust God and do what He asks, however, we find that even His most difficult commandments allow us to grow in ways we otherwise could not have.
